A Team Finally Hosted, and Won, Its Own Super Bowl in 2021

The Super Bowl exists because of the 1966 merger agreement between the NFL and the rival AFL, which created a single championship game between each league's own champion, first played that way in January 1967 for the 1966 season. The two leagues did not fully merge into one until the 1970 season, when the combined league was reorganized into the American and National Football Conferences; only from that point on was the Super Bowl one league's own championship rather than a game between two separate leagues. The Super Bowl is played annually in early February, at a different American city each year, with the host stadium chosen years in advance by NFL team owners through a bidding process. For more than five decades a standing rule barred a team from hosting its own Super Bowl. That rule was set aside for the first time in February 2021, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played, and won, Super Bowl LV in their own home stadium.
