Epsom Derby

Horse Racing Classics

The Derby Stakes, usually called the Derby and often the Epsom Derby, is a Group 1 flat horse race in England for three-year-old colts and fillies. It is run at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey on the first Saturday of June over a mile, four furlongs and 10 yards, about one and a half miles, and it was first run in 1780. It is Britain's joint richest flat race and the most prestigious of the five Classics, sometimes called the Blue Riband of the turf. The race is the middle leg of the Triple Crown, between the 2000 Guineas and the St Leger. Its name comes from the sponsorship of the Earl of Derby and has been borrowed for many other events, notably the Kentucky Derby.
