Olympic Day is an annual observance held on 23 June by National Olympic Committees around the world to mark the founding of the International Olympic Committee in 1894 and to encourage participation in sport at every level of skill. It was established by the IOC in 1948 at the proposal of IOC president J. Sigfrid Edstrom, with the first celebrations held by the National Olympic Committees of Portugal, Greece, Austria, Canada, Switzerland, Great Britain, Uruguay, Venezuela and Belgium. Since 1987 the observance has centred on the Olympic Day Run, alongside wider sport, culture and education activities each National Olympic Committee organizes on its own.
