Australian Olympic Committee (AOC)

National Olympic Committees

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) is the National Olympic Committee for Australia, founded in 1895 and headquartered in Sydney, one of only a small number of nations to have competed at every Summer Olympic Games since 1896. It selects and funds Australia's Olympic team, coordinated the country's hosting of the 1956 Melbourne and 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics, and is preparing Australia's third hosting for the 2032 Brisbane Summer Olympics.

FAQs

How did Australia go from competing as part of Australasia to having its own Olympic body?

The federated Australian Olympic Council was formed on 29 April 1920, after the case for splitting Australasia into two Olympic nations.

Australia and New Zealand were first grouped together at the Olympics as Australasia. The Australian Olympic Committee's centenary timeline records the argument put to the International Olympic Committee that Australasia should be split into Australia and New Zealand as Olympic nations. On 29 April 1920 the federated Australian Olympic Council was formed, and James "Pa" Taylor was elected its president.
