FAQs

Did New Zealand always compete at the Olympic Games as its own team?

New Zealand first competed grouped with Australia as Australasia, and first competed independently in Antwerp in 1920.

No. The Oceania National Olympic Committees page records that New Zealand first took part in the Olympic Games grouped with Australia as Australasia. Its first appearance as an independent entity was at the VII Olympiad in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1920. The same page says the New Zealand Olympic Committee was established in 1911 and was recognised by the International Olympic Committee in 1919.
