FAQs

When was the Indonesian Olympic Committee founded and when did the IOC recognize it?

The committee was founded on 19 January 1947 in Yogyakarta and was recognized by the IOC on 11 March 1952.

The committee's own history page says it was founded on 19 January 1947 in Yogyakarta, with Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX as its first president. He wrote to the International Olympic Committee in February 1947 to ask for membership, but unsafe conditions at home during the second Dutch military offensive meant no Indonesian team could be sent to the 1948 London Games. After sovereignty was recognized in December 1949 and the second National Sports Week was held in Jakarta in 1951, the committee wrote to the IOC again in February 1952. The IOC replied on 11 March 1952 that it recognized the committee, and Indonesia took part in its first Olympic Games at Helsinki that year.
