Yonin shogi is a four-player version of shogi, the Japanese chess, and the Ludii Portal credits it to Ota Mitsuyasu with a creation date of 1995 and a modern period. Pieces move exactly as in normal shogi, and ranks and files are defined relative to the direction of the moving player pieces so that each of the four players sees the board from their own side. The rules differ from the two-player game in how a defeat is handled. Once a player is mated, their Osho (king) is removed, but all their other pieces stay on the board as neutral obstacles. Those neutral pieces cannot move unless they are captured, though they still give check, which makes the later part of a game a crowded and tactical affair. The Ludii record lists related games such as Shogi, Minishogi, Unashogi, Dice Shogi, Kyoto Shogi and Tenjiku Shogi as similar games.
