Wonder Boy (video game)

Platform video game

Wonder Boy is a 1986 platform video game developed by Escape and published by Sega for arcades, later ported to Sega's SG-1000 and Master System consoles as well as home computers including the Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum, with those computer versions published by Activision. The game casts its player as a boy running through prehistoric landscapes, skateboarding, throwing axes and rescuing his girlfriend while collecting fruit for health. It launched in Japanese arcades on April 21, 1986, reaching North American arcades that July. Wonder Boy began a long-running franchise that continued through five direct sequels and several spin-off series exploring different genres, and its arcade success led Hudson Soft to develop the similarly styled Adventure Island for the Nintendo Entertainment System. A high-definition remake, Wonder Boy Returns, was released on Steam in October 2016 with later ports to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
