The Wilderness (wargame)

Modern Conquest and War Games

The Wilderness, subtitled Lee Meets Grant: An Operational Study, is a two-player board wargame published by Simulations Canada in 1983. It simulates the Battle of the Wilderness, fought in May 1864 in the dense forest terrain of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, with one player commanding Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant and the other Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee. Designed in 1982 and printed in a run of 1,000 copies, the game features an elaborate command-and-control system representing the difficulty Civil War commanders faced directing units through heavy woodland, along with rules covering movement, supply and combat effectiveness adapted specifically to the close terrain that shaped the historical battle's chaotic fighting.
