West of Alamein

Modern Conquest and War Games

West of Alamein is a board wargame published by Avalon Hill in 1988, designed by Bob McNamara as an expansion module for the Advanced Squad Leader tactical combat system, simulating fighting in the North African desert campaign of the Second World War. It holds the distinction of being the first Advanced Squad Leader expansion to introduce British forces into the system, broadening a game line that had until then focused on other combatants. The set includes five mounted hex-grid maps measuring eight by twenty-two inches, 1,224 die-cut counters split between half-inch and five-eighths-inch sizes, three chapters of rules for the system's binder format, and eight numbered scenarios covering different desert engagements. Interior artwork was produced by Charles Kibler and the cover by George Parrish. A reviewer for Games International praised the desert maps as beautiful and awarded the module a perfect five-star rating, while noting concerns about its price and its dependence on maps published in an earlier Advanced Squad Leader expansion.
