Warriors of Mars (game)

Warriors of Mars is a 1974 miniatures wargame rulebook written by Gary Gygax and Brian Blume and published by Tactical Studies Rules, the company that had just released the first edition of Dungeons and Dragons. The fifty-six page booklet supplies rules for simulating combat on Barsoom, the fictional Mars of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter novels, illustrated by Greg Bell in the same style as TSR's earliest Dungeons and Dragons publications. Gygax and TSR issued the rules without securing permission from the Burroughs estate, which responded with a cease and desist order soon after release, so the game was pulled from distribution while only a small number of copies had sold. That short print run has since made the rulebook a scarce and expensive collectible among wargame and Dungeons and Dragons historians.
