Wacht am Rhein (game)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Wacht am Rhein is a grand tactical board wargame published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) in 1977, simulating the German Battle of the Bulge offensive of late 1944 during the Second World War. Designed by Jim Dunnigan with illustrations by Redmond Simonsen, the game models fighting at the battalion and company level using roughly 1,400 cardboard counters, making it one of the largest and most detailed monster wargames SPI produced. Two players take opposing sides, one directing the German offensive and the other the Allied defense, working through the historical terrain and order of battle of the Ardennes campaign. The scale and counter density place it among the most ambitious tabletop simulations of its era, aimed at wargamers wanting a highly granular refight of the battle rather than an abstracted overview.
