Vint

Trick-Taking Card Games

Vint is a trick-taking game for four players in fixed partnerships that was fashionable in late nineteenth century Russia. Its Russian name means screw and refers to the rotating auction with ever higher bids, which is compared to the tightening of a screw. Players use a standard 52-card pack, bid a level and a denomination in the manner later used in Auction and Contract Bridge, and then each plays their own hand because there is no exposed dummy. An auction ends only after twelve consecutive passes. Its scoring is complex, with games, rubbers, bonus scores above the line and rewards for slams, and the points per trick depend on the level of the bid. A version survived in Finland and developed into Skruuvi, and a simplified form reached North America and influenced the development of Contract Bridge in the 1920s.
