Villa Paletti

Dexterity and Physical Skill Games

Villa Paletti is a manual dexterity board game designed by Bill Payne and published by Zoch Verlag in 2001, in which two to four players build an increasingly tall tower out of wooden columns and floor platforms without causing it to collapse. On a turn a player removes a column from one of the lower completed floors and moves it up to support a new floor being added to the top, and if that floor was left with too few supporting columns or the tower overbalances during the move, the resulting collapse ends the game for whoever caused it. The tension between the need to keep adding new floors and the shrinking pool of stable columns lower down gives the game its central risk. Villa Paletti won the Spiel des Jahres in 2002, the Tric Trac Gold Medal in 2001, the Games magazine Top Dexterity Game award, and the Belgian Game of the Year in 2003, and a larger scaled variant titled Palazzo Paletti was later released.
