Troefcall is a trick-taking card game that originated in Suriname and shares characteristics with belote and hearts; it may descend from the Indian card game court piece. The game was brought to the Netherlands by Surinamese Dutch communities and is now played there as well as in Suriname, across all of Suriname's ethnic groups. Troefcall is played with a trump suit, called a tjall. Scoring uses fixed terms: a bounie is the total gain of 52 points, or four times 13 points, and a kap is worth 13 points, a term derived from the Hindi word koth. More than 100,000 people in Suriname and the Netherlands play the game, which has organized competitive structures, including the Troefcall Sportbond Nederland in the Netherlands and the Surinaamse Troefcall Bond in Suriname, both of which run official competitions.
