Ticktack

Displacement and Capture Games

Ticktack, sometimes spelled Tick-Tack, is a historical English tables game for two players, played on a board similar to those used today for backgammon and other tables games. Each side commands fifteen men and two dice, moving across twelve playing positions in a race that can be won in several different ways, including the distinct winning conditions known as Toots and Rovers. The game is attested at least as early as 1586 among English country gentlemen, and the earliest comprehensive rules were recorded in 1672 by the naturalist Francis Willughby, with a fuller account later appearing in Charles Cotton's 1674 gaming compendium The Compleat Gamester. Popularity faded by the middle of the eighteenth century, leaving Ticktack as one of the family of English tables games that fed into the lineage now represented by backgammon.
