The Warlock of Firetop Mountain (board game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is a dungeon-crawling adventure board game released by Games Workshop in 1986, adapting the 1982 Fighting Fantasy gamebook of the same name by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. Two to six players guide adventurers through a maze-like dungeon beneath the warlock Zagor's stronghold, battling monsters and gathering treasure while tracking three core statistics, Skill, Stamina and Luck, carried over from the original gamebook system. A distinctive deduction subgame runs alongside the exploration: players must work out a hidden three-key combination through clues and card exchanges reminiscent of Cluedo before they can unlock Zagor's treasure chest and win. Steve Jackson, the British designer of the Fighting Fantasy series, adapted his own gamebook for the tabletop four years after its original publication, with box art by Peter Andrew Jones and interior art by Dave Andrews. A typical session runs about two hours.
