The Next War (board game)

Modern Conquest and War Games

The Next War, subtitled Modern Conflict in Europe, is a board wargame designed by Jim Dunnigan with graphics by Redmond A. Simonsen, published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) in 1978. It simulates a hypothetical Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Europe during the Cold War, a scenario common to strategic-level wargames of the late 1970s reflecting contemporary NATO-Warsaw Pact tensions. The game is played by two players, one commanding NATO forces defending Western Europe and the other commanding the invading Warsaw Pact forces, resolving movement and combat across a large-scale map of the European theater. As one of SPI's larger Cold War designs, it reflected the design studio's practice of publishing detailed operational-level simulations of plausible contemporary conflicts alongside its historical wargames.
