The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game, also called LOTR TCG, is an out-of-print collectible card game produced by Decipher, Inc. and released in November 2001. It is based on Peter Jackson's film trilogy and the J. R. R. Tolkien novel, and used film stills and, from 2004, Weta Workshop art for book-only characters. In 2002 it won Origins Awards for Best Trading Card Game and Best Graphic Presentation of a Card Game for 2001. Each player builds a deck of equal numbers of Free Peoples and Shadow cards. On their turn a player acts as the Free Peoples player and tries to move the Fellowship along a path of nine sites to destroy the One Ring, while the Shadow players try to kill or corrupt the ring-bearer. A shared twilight pool acts as the cost mechanism. Decipher's license expired on 30 July 2007, and the online version closed in 2010.
