The Clock Without a Face is a puzzle book and real world treasure hunt published by McSweeney's in May 2010, written by Eli Horowitz and Mac Barnett with illustrations by Scott Teplin. Its thirty page story follows the theft of twelve jeweled numbers from the face of the Emerald Khroniker, a cursed clock, and challenges readers to work through textual and visual clues scattered across the book to identify the thieves and recover the missing numbers. What sets the project apart from an ordinary mystery story is that the authors had jeweler Anna Sheffield craft twelve real emerald studded numbers and bury them at real locations across the United States, so that readers who solved the book's puzzles correctly could travel to an actual site and dig up a genuine treasure, turning the printed story into a functioning nationwide game.
