Tavla

Tavla is a traditional Turkish tables game that in everyday use most often refers to backgammon itself, while also serving as a general term in Turkish for the wider family of tables games played on the same divided board. The game is played widely across Turkey and in Persian-speaking regions, where related versions are known as Takhteh or Takhte, and it shares its board layout, its use of two dice, doubled checkers and its basic movement rules with modern backgammon closely enough that the two are frequently treated as the same game. Traditional Tavla play differs from standard backgammon tournament rules in several specific ways: the player who wins the opening roll to determine turn order re-rolls the dice again for their first actual turn rather than using the original roll, and the scoring for ordinary wins and gammons follows a simpler one-point and two-point split. Traditional Tavla as commonly played also omits the doubling cube used in modern competitive backgammon, keeping stakes fixed across a match rather than allowing players to raise them during play.
