Tannenberg (wargame)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Tannenberg is a two-player board wargame published by Simulations Publications Inc. in 1969. It simulates the Battle of Tannenberg on the Eastern Front of the First World War, in which Germany used its rail network to encircle the Russian Second Army in East Prussia. Jim Dunnigan designed it as a companion to Avalon Hill's 1914, and rules let the two games combine into a two-front wargame. One player commands the Russians and the other the Germans. The 1969 edition uses a simple alternating turn system in which one game turn represents three days. It was one of the small, cheap Test Series games, sold in ziplock bags with thin paper counters. In 1978 it was revised to match the mechanics of The Great War in the East, adding supply, command headquarters ranges and unit ratings, and a three-player option in which two Russian players may not communicate unless the German can listen. The revision was published as a pull-out game in Strategy and Tactics magazine and then sold separately.
