Tam cúc is a traditional Vietnamese trick-taking card game for two to four players. It is played with a special deck of thirty-two cards whose faces carry the names of Chinese chess pieces, printed in two colours, red and black, rather than the pips and court cards of a Western pack. A player leading to a trick does not have to play a single card: the lead may be a single card, a pair, a sequence in one suit, or a set of four or five soldiers, and the other players must answer with a play of the same type. The highest play of that type takes the trick, so the game mixes the trick-taking idea with the set-building feel of a climbing game.
