Takenoko (board game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Takenoko is a board game for two to four players, released in 2011 and designed by Antoine Bauza. Players tend a bamboo garden for a hungry panda: each turn they spend action points to cultivate hexagon plots, lay irrigation channels or grow bamboo stalks, while the panda wanders the board and eats what they have grown. Dice rolling decides which bamboo colour grows, so luck tempers planning without derailing it, and completing contracts, which are layered bonus objectives, gives each player a different route to victory. Sessions last about 45 minutes. The game is rated light in weight for ages eight and up and is described as accessible to new and casual players, with a richly illustrated board.
