TacTix

Alignment and Abstract Strategy Games

TacTix is an impartial board game credited to the designer Piet Hein, with a creation date of 1949 in the Ludii game portal, which also records the alternative name Bulo. It is played on a small square board, usually described as 4x4, that starts completely full of one kind of piece. On a turn a player removes one or more adjacent pieces from a single row or column, and the person who takes the last piece off the board loses. Because both sides always have the same moves available it counts as an impartial game, and the portal files it among blocking board games played over space. The 4x4 version has been completely solved and is a win for the second player. Folk art versions with a wooden board and marbles turned up on the web, and computer versions are available. The portal lists Nim, Konane and the L Game among its similar games.
