A strength tester machine is a coin operated amusement device that rates how forcefully a person presses a lever, squeezes a hand grip or punches a padded target, giving a score meant to represent the person's physical strength. The machines trace back to early twentieth century carnivals, penny arcades and amusement parks, later becoming familiar fixtures in bars and family entertainment centers. Many modern strength testers have evolved into redemption style arcade games with LCD screens providing video feedback rather than a simple mechanical dial, and some manufacturers built full video game presentations around the mechanic; Sega's 1981 machine K.O. Punch is an early example of a strength tester using video game technology to display the player's result.
