Starfire (board wargame)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Starfire is a board wargame, a 4X game of exploring, expanding, exploiting and exterminating, simulating space warfare and empire building in the 23rd century, created by Stephen V. Cole in 1979. It was first published by Task Force Games and is currently maintained by the Starfire Design Studio. Players maneuver fleets of spaceships with distinct technological capabilities, and the game uses an impulse based movement system that keeps both players constantly involved through near simultaneous actions rather than fully sequential turns. Six editions have been released since the original 1979 to 1981 release, through Boxed Starfire, Imperial Starfire, Galactic Starfire, ULTRA Starfire and Solar Starfire in 2012, each adding further strategic and tactical complexity while keeping the system accessible to new players. The setting also inspired eight published science fiction novels, chiefly by Steve White and David Weber, including a tetralogy the two authors wrote together between 1990 and 2002 that reached The New York Times bestseller list.
