Star Trek: The Role Playing Game is a tabletop role-playing game set in the Star Trek universe, published by FASA Corporation from 1982 to 1989. FASA acquired the Star Trek licence in 1982 after rejecting four outside designs that focused too heavily on combat, and approved a fifth from the freelance group Fantasimulations Association. The 1983 boxed set contained three books, two counter sheets and dice, and used a tactical combat system on a square grid derived from the FASA board game Grav-Ball. Starship combat gave each section head a console so that the captain coordinated the crew. Player characters are mostly Starfleet officers on exploration missions, in a setting before Star Trek: The Next Generation. Supplements such as The Klingons, co-authored by John M. Ford, shaped later Star Trek productions, and Paramount withdrew the licence in 1989.
