Spectrangle

Abstract strategy board game

Spectrangle is a triangular tile-based abstract strategy game in which players place colored tiles called trangs onto a triangular board to score points. The original concept was created by Graham Gordon in 1989, and the game was invented in its published form by Alan John Fraser-Dackers, Maxwell Graham Gordon and Lester Wynne Jordan. It has been published under different names by several companies, including Ghengis Games, Greystone Games, Spears Games, Jumbo and Educational Insights, though it is currently out of print. The set holds thirty-five uniquely colored triangular tiles plus one white joker tile, drawn from a bag and placed so that touching edges share a matching color. A placed tile scores by multiplying its own value by the bonus value of the board space it occupies and by the number of tiles already touching it, so later placements in a cluster can be worth far more than early ones. The game supports one to four players, takes about a minute to set up and roughly forty-five minutes to play, and is intended for ages eight and up; a player unable to make a legal placement may instead swap one tile from their hand.
