Shogun (2006 board game)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Shogun is a strategy board game designed by Dirk Henn and published by Queen Games in 2006. It is based on his earlier game Wallenstein and is set in Japan during the Sengoku or Warring States period, which ends with the Tokugawa Shogunate. Each player is a daimyo with the same ten possible actions, using them to develop provinces and secure points by deploying armies. Battles are resolved with a cube tower: the troops of both sides are dropped in together and the cubes that fall out at the bottom show who has won. Provinces, temples, theatres and castles score points at two tallies, and the daimyo with the most points after the second tally becomes shogun. The main board is printed on both sides with different province layouts. The game was named Golden Geek Board Game of the Year for 2007.
