Set (card game)

Matching and Shedding Card Games

Set is a real-time card game in which every player searches the same layout at once and races to be first to spot a valid set. The Marsha Falco design dates to 1974, and Set Enterprises published it in 1991. The deck holds 81 cards, and each card varies across four features: the number of shapes (one, two or three), the shape (diamond, squiggle or oval), the shading (solid, striped or open) and the color (red, green or purple). Every possible combination of features appears exactly once. A set is three cards in which each feature is either the same on all three or different on all three. The dealer lays out twelve cards and the first player to call Set takes the three cards; if no set is showing, three more cards are dealt. Whoever holds the most sets when the deck runs out wins. The game grew out of a coding system Falco devised for her work as a geneticist.
