San Marco (board game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

San Marco is a board game designed by Alan R. Moon and Aaron Weissblum, first published in 2001 by Ravensburger. It is set in Venice and takes its name from one of the city's six districts, across which two to four players compete for political influence. The game combines area control with card drafting: players hold cards that let them place or move aristocrats and bridges around the map. Play is organized into a sequence of passages, each broken down into turns, and players score points based on the districts where their influence is strongest at each passage's end. Its blend of hidden information, area majority scoring and Venetian setting made it a well regarded entry in the wave of German style strategy board games of the early 2000s.
