Saboteur (card game)

Deduction and Guessing Games

Saboteur is a mining-themed card game designed by Frederic Moyersoen and first published in 2004 by AMIGO, with editions since released by more than thirty other publishers worldwide. Between three and ten players are secretly assigned one of two hidden roles, Miners or Saboteurs, and over three rounds the Miners cooperate by playing path cards to build a tunnel from the mine entrance toward hidden gold nuggets, while the Saboteurs play action cards to break tunnels, block tools or otherwise sabotage the group's progress without revealing their true allegiance. Because roles are secret, much of the game revolves around reading other players' behavior to guess who is working against the group, similar in spirit to social deduction games. A round ends when the gold is found or the deck runs out, and rewards are distributed to the winning side, making identity and trust as important to Saboteur as the physical tunnel-building itself.
