Rocroi (wargame)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Rocroi, subtitled 19 May 1643 - The End of Spanish Ascendancy, is a two-player board wargame designed by Linda Mosca with graphic design by Redmond A. Simonsen, published by Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) in 1976. It simulates the 1643 Battle of Rocroi during the Thirty Years' War, a decisive engagement in which French forces broke the reputation of Spain's famed infantry tercios, marking a turning point in early modern European military history. One player commands the Spanish army and the other the French, maneuvering units across a 22 by 17 inch hex-grid map with roughly 100 counters, each turn representing about 45 minutes of the battle's real time. The game originally appeared as one of four titles bundled in SPI's Thirty Years War quadrigame box before later being made available as a separate folio edition, following the same shared-rules multi-battle packaging SPI used across several of its historical war series from the same period.
