Republic of Rome (game)
Historical wargame
The Republic of Rome is a strategy board game designed by Don Greenwood, Robert Haines and Richard Berthold and released by Avalon Hill in 1990, with later editions issued by Jeux Descartes and, in 2009, by Valley Games. Three to six players, or a single player under the game's solitaire rules, each control a faction of senators competing for influence within the Roman Senate across a span of history running from 264 BC to 43 BC. Rather than facing each other directly as armies, players must cooperate to manage recurring crises such as wars, uprisings and the Senate's own internal factional politics, since a Rome that collapses ends the game for everyone at once. Individual ambition is balanced against this shared survival requirement, a design tension the game is frequently cited for among historical strategy titles.
