Préférence

Trick-Taking Card Games

Préférence, frequently spelt without its accents, is a Central and Eastern European card game of the plain-trick type with bidding. It is played by three players with ten cards each from a 32-card Piquet deck. The game probably originated in early nineteenth century Austria and had become the second most popular game in Vienna by 1980. It also took hold in Russia, where it was played by the higher echelons of society, and the regional variant known as Preferans remains very popular there. Other variants are played in countries from Lithuania to Greece. This entry rests on the source lead only, so detailed bidding and scoring rules are left to later depth work.
