Portal is a series of Magic: The Gathering starter level card sets published by Wizards of the Coast, designed to introduce new players to the game with simplified rules and card text. The original Portal set released on May 1, 1997 removed certain mechanics found in the main game, such as instant speed spells, to make games easier to follow. It was followed by Portal Second Age on June 23, 1998 and by Portal Three Kingdoms on July 6, 1999, the last of which drew its characters and setting from the fourteenth century Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms rather than the standard Magic fantasy setting. The three Portal sets were sold separately from the main tournament legal product line and aimed squarely at beginners rather than experienced players.
