Patton's 3rd Army

Modern Conquest and War Games

Patton's 3rd Army is a two-player board wargame published in 1980 by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) and designed by Joseph Balkoski. It simulates the Battle of Metz, a phase of the United States Third Army's offensive through the Lorraine region of France in 1944 during World War II, under the command of General George S. Patton. The game was originally distributed as a free pull-out title bound into issue 78 of SPI's magazine Strategy and Tactics, a distribution method the company used to reach subscribers directly, and it was later released separately as a boxed set. Players take opposing sides of the Lorraine campaign, moving counters representing American and German units across a map depicting the fortified city of Metz and its surrounding terrain, resolving combat with dice and printed odds tables typical of hex-and-counter wargames of the period.
