Ogre is a science fiction tabletop wargame set in the late twenty-first century. One player commands a single giant, self-directed cybernetic tank, the Ogre, which drives across a hex-grid battlefield toward the other player's command post. The second player defends that headquarters with a mixed force of conventional tanks, infantry and artillery, and tries to wreck the machine before it arrives. The two sides are deliberately unequal, which makes the game an asymmetrical contest between one powerful unit and many weaker ones, played with counters, a map and dice. It was designed by the American game designer Steve Jackson and first published by Metagaming Concepts in 1977 as the first title in that company's small, inexpensive MicroGame line. When Jackson left Metagaming to found his own firm he took the rights with him, and later editions have been produced by Steve Jackson Games. It was Jackson's first published game design.
