Ninja Gaiden 3 is an action-adventure hack and slash video game developed by Team Ninja and published by Tecmo Koei, released in March 2012 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game follows the ninja Ryu Hayabusa as he confronts a terrorist group led by a figure known as the Regent of the Mask, who places a curse on Ryu's arm, drawing him into a global threat that forces him to work alongside military forces to prevent a wider catastrophe. This entry marked a notable change in direction for the series, since it was the first main installment not directed by longtime franchise director Tomonobu Itagaki, with Fumihiko Yasuda and Yosuke Hayashi taking over creative control instead. Later that same year an expanded and revised version titled Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge was released for the Wii U, and it was subsequently ported to additional platforms, giving the game a second life in a form that addressed criticism of the original release.
