Nebula 19

Modern Conquest and War Games

Nebula 19 is a science fiction board wargame designed by Harry Mishler and published by the Mishler Company in 1971, with a revised second edition following in 1977. The game simulates tactical starship combat across a starcluster containing fifteen stars and seven nebulae, primarily for two players, though its scenarios can accommodate up to four with added naval-fleet combat variants. Combat is resolved on a hex map using three-dimensional X, Y and Z coordinates to model genuinely three-dimensional space maneuvering, with players plotting movement in secret on separate maps before revealing and comparing positions to resolve engagements. Nebula 19 offers basic, standard and advanced levels of play, letting new players learn the core system before progressing to its fuller tactical detail, and its emphasis on hidden, coordinate-based movement set it apart from many of its board wargame contemporaries, which typically relied on a single shared, fully visible map.
