Nain Jaune

Matching and Shedding Card Games

Nain Jaune, or Yellow Dwarf, is a traditional French card game played with a standard 52-card pack and a board of five compartments, which is why it counts as both a card game and a board game. It is a shedding game in which the aim is to get rid of all your cards, and it mixes the luck of the deal with the strategy of building suit sequences. The name comes from the seven of diamonds, pictured as a yellow dwarf at the centre of the board, and ultimately from a 1698 fairy tale by Baroness d'Aulnoy. The game first appeared around 1760 in Lorraine and belongs to the hocs group of games. Its 1760 rules allowed only three or five players, while simpler rules published in 1789 allowed three to eight players and are still used. It revived around 1850 and again between the world wars, and it remains a popular French family game.
