Minchiate

Trick-Taking Card Games

Minchiate, also known as Germini or Tarocchi fiorentini, is an early sixteenth-century trick-taking card game that originated in Florence, Italy. It is played with an expanded ninety-seven card tarot deck carrying forty trump cards plus the unnumbered Fool, considerably more trumps than a standard tarot pack, and points are scored by capturing certain individual cards and card combinations during play. The game is most commonly played by four people arranged as two partnerships, though it can also be played with two or three players. Minchiate survived in the Tuscan card-playing tradition long after most of Europe's tarot card games had faded into obscurity elsewhere, and its distinctive expanded trump sequence, which added astrological, elemental and virtue-themed trumps to the standard tarot trump run, remains one of the more elaborate structures found in any historical trick-taking card game.
