Midnight, also known as 1-4-24, is a dice game played with six dice. Players take turns, with one player rolling at a time. On a turn the player rolls all six dice and must keep at least one of them, then rerolls the dice not kept, repeating until no dice remain to be rolled; dice once kept cannot be rerolled. To score, a player must have kept both a one and a four. If so, the other four dice are totalled to give the score, so the highest possible score is 24, from four sixes. A player without a one and a four scores nothing. The highest total wins, and when players tie for the highest total any money bet is added to the next game. A variant called 2-4-24 requires a two and a four instead of a one and a four. Strategy analysis shows that keeping a one or a four when first thrown, and otherwise keeping a single die, gives the best chance of scoring, about 95.7 percent.
