The Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game is a tabletop miniature wargame produced by Games Workshop and based on the Peter Jackson film trilogies of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, as well as the books by J. R. R. Tolkien that inspired them. It was first released in 2001 to coincide with the film The Fellowship of the Ring and was earlier marketed under titles naming The Lord of the Rings and the individual Hobbit films. Players collect, assemble and paint armies of miniatures, model terrain, and fight on a board generally four feet square. Armies are built with a points system so that forces are evenly matched, and a turn moves through phases in which players roll for priority, move, shoot and fight. The game is usually played by two players, since the force lists divide into Good and Evil, though very large battles are easier to run with players working in teams. A complete edition of the rules appeared in September 2005, a War of the Ring expansion for mass battles in 2009, Forge World took over production in 2015, and a combined Rules Manual replaced the older books in 2018.
