Melee (game)

Board wargame

Melee is a board wargame designed by Steve Jackson and released in 1977 by Metagaming Concepts as part of its microgame line. Players build combatants by allocating a fixed pool of points across Strength and Dexterity attributes, then move and fight opponents on a hexagonal arena map using six sided dice to resolve attacks and defenses. The system was later combined with the fantasy magic rules of Wizard to form the core of The Fantasy Trip roleplaying game. Melee went out of print for decades before Steve Jackson Games revived and re-released it in 2019, restoring a title regarded as an influential early example of tactical miniature-style combat in a small, inexpensive board game format.
