Trick-Taking Card Games

Mariáš is a trick-taking card game of the marriage family that holds a special place in Czech and Slovak card playing; Pagat calls it the most popular card game in both countries. It uses a 32-card pack in German suits, with hearts, bells, acorns and leaves, and the usual game seats three players. In each deal one of them takes on the other two, either by trying to gather more card points from aces, tens and the final trick, or by undertaking a contract to win every trick or none at all. A player who holds the king and the over-knave of one suit together may declare the pair for bonus points, and the pair is itself called a mariáš or hláška. Four-player and two-player versions exist, and the name is borrowed from the French word mariage.
