Magic Realm is a fantasy adventure board game designed by Richard Hamblen and published by Avalon Hill in 1979. It accommodates one to sixteen players aged twelve and up, and its complexity is closer to a role-playing game than to a traditional wargame, with a low chance factor and sessions that can exceed four hours. The board uses a modular design of double-sided hexagonal tiles that can be arranged in millions of configurations while keeping the paths between them connected, and players choose from sixteen distinct characters, each with unique abilities and relationships to the various factions of the game world. A revised second edition was released in 1986 with a restructured rulebook and modified gameplay mechanics, and the game went out of print in 1998 following the closure of Avalon Hill, but it has since achieved cult status among dedicated gamers, with an unofficial fan-made third edition clarifying ambiguities in the original rules and multiple fan communities still supporting play today.
