Mage Wars Arena

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Mage Wars Arena is a customizable strategy card game designed by Bryan Pope and published by Arcane Wonders beginning in 2012, the first release in the wider Mage Wars series. Each player takes on the role of a powerful mage and builds a personal spellbook deck before facing an opponent in a head to head arena duel, casting creatures, equipment, enchantments and attack spells to whittle down the rival mage's life total. Although it is packaged and sold as a card game, its designers deliberately borrowed mechanics more commonly associated with tactical miniatures games, including a gridded arena board, explicit movement and facing rules and range based spell targeting, giving matches a slower, more positional feel than a typical collectible card game and giving the series a distinct identity within the modern hobby strategy game space.
