Lord of the Rings is a cooperative board game designed by Reiner Knizia and based on J. R. R. Tolkien's novel of the same name, first published in 2000 by Kosmos in Germany, Wizards of the Coast in the United States and Parker Brothers in the United Kingdom, with artwork by John Howe. Between two and five players each take the role of a hobbit and work together, rather than against one another, moving along a shared path toward Mount Doom while managing a communal pool of life tokens and fighting off the game's corruption track, which represents the growing influence of the One Ring. A typical game lasts forty-five to seventy-five minutes. The game was notable on release for popularizing cooperative mechanics in mainstream board gaming and received a Spiel des Jahres special award for board game of the year. Fantasy Flight Games later published a revised edition with updated components and expansions covering further parts of Tolkien's story.
